Phase 2: Video 3B

NOTE:

The acceptance of technology is considered to improve when teachers can perceive the ease of use and the effective use of technology. It is argued that one can predict the overall use of technology through changing attitudes, intentions and thus motivating the actual use of technology.

If you understand the functional and effective use of a technological device and you are able to perceive its ease of use such easy, medium to difficult, it will determine your attitude towards using the device. With a positive attitude or negative attitude, it will strengthen or diminish your reasons for using the device and ultimately lead you to using or not using technology.

So as a tip, if you struggle with the ease of use and the effectiveness of use, ask assistance to guide you through the tech device so it will improve your attitude to ultimately lead you to happily and excitedly using technology to enhance learning and teaching.

Phase 2: Video 3C

“The world comprises three kinds of people:

A small group who make things happen,

A larger group who watch things happen,

And the great majority who not even know what is happening”

Nicholas Murrray Butler

In order to impact change, we need to change ourselves. When we consider the development and the growth of our environment we must ask ourselves, what role do I play? The roles we play will help us to determine what contribution we can make and what we need to improve on.

Enter the PENCIL METAPHOR> The pencil metaphor, I believe, is an apt description as it involves the pencil, the classic invention that has met many modern innovations and to this day can still be considered indispensable to education. Its central importance is rivaled by its infamous feud with pens, paper and now technology.

The pencil metaphors comprise of 6 ways to teachers respond to education technology:

The Hanger-ons

Hanger-ons know all the right lingo, attend all the conferences and seminars but just don’t do anything

The Erasers

These people endeavor to undo much, if not all, of the work done by the leaders

The Ferrules

These people hang on tightly to what they know. They keep a strong grip on their traditional practices, and feel that there is not a place for technology in their classroom

The Wood

These people would use technology is they received the gear, set it up, train them individually, and keep it running. All they need is help from some sharp person and they would be doing it too

The Sharp ones

These are the people that see what the early adopters have done, willingly grab the best of it, learn from the mistakes of others, and do great stuff with their learnes

The Leaders

These people are the first to take on the technology, the early adopters would usually document and enthusiastically share what they have tried, flaws and all.

Phase 2: Video 3C

We have come to end of Phase 2: ICT Landscape.

We hope that this experience has given you the necessary tools, understanding, insight, learning strategies, information and given you a trajectory to help you to step out and ADOPT, ADAPT, ENACT!!

The importance of technology in education is undoubtedly the ability to reach more students more efficiently. So let us evolve with the changing times and build on the newness of this evolution. It is in our ability to improve the state of education, the lives of our learners and South Africa as a whole.

WE wish you all the Appiness and Tech-Savviness for your new journey.

Thank you from the eLearning Directorate, of the Western Cape Education Department
