Curriculum Alignment
Awaiting formal communication and guidance from DBE on rollout schedules, curriculum content and delivery plans
In the meantime...
1) Understand the aims of the curriculum. View the diagramme below and listen to the explanation thereof. (Focus of this workshop)
2) Understand the WCED plan to prepare the organisation through the demystification initiatives. (Focus of this workshop)
3) Understand the implementation journey and pilot towards introducing the curriculum. (Not a focus of this workshop)
1) Aims of the curriculum
The Coding and Robotics subject is aimed at guiding and preparing learners to solve problems, think critically, work collaboratively and creatively, function in a digital and information-driven world, apply digital and ICT skills and to transfer these skills to solve everyday problems and its possibilities, including equipping learners for meaningful and successful living in a rapidly changing and transforming society.
Through Coding and Robotics learners are exposed to a range of knowledge, skills and values. The Subject methodology is based on Computational Thinking and the Engineering Design Process.
Natural evolution: Electronics+ Mechanism + Coding = Robotics
2) WCED Demystification initiatives
WCED decided to build on conversations to understand what coding is and the educational value thereof. This will be done through:
-
Demystification training programmes, campaigns, discussions with a focus on computational thinking, coding, robotics and digital skills.
-
Establish Innovation Hubs through after school programmes, coding and robotic events and clubs aimed at instilling curiosity and creativity for coding and robotics
To note: these programmes are not directly link to the requirements for the subject coding and robotics, but rather, it is aimed at preparing the ground for the implementation of curriculum reform.
3) Coding and robotics curriculum pilot and implications for curriculum reform

A selection of schools in the country received training on Moodle in preparation for the Coding and robotic curriculum They are also expected to implement and test the curriculum outcomes as best possible. However, the full scale implementation is not yet a directive nor has final decision been made in terms of the deployment, implementation and preparations for implementation.

To note: WCED has taken the decision to proceed with demystification programmes towards understanding the value of coding and robotics and other digital skills within education. These however does not by any means provide instruction for implementation at this stage. However, the programmes and initiatives are based on the fundamentals found within the draft curriculum to ensure alignment of the fundamental knowledge and aims within the envisaged curriculum. See below a list of possible topics within the various streams.
To note: The above is introduced incrementally and at a level that is fitting for the different phases. Not all concepts listed are implemented in all grades.
Below you can view the draft curriculum as it was published for public comments. It is currently in a state of revision yet to be finalised.
